Which is right for you, CoolSculpting or Liposuction?

Coolsculpting or Liposuction

While a healthy diet and consistent exercise routine is often touted as the best way to achieve a toned body, many people find out that this plan is just not enough. When stubborn pockets of fat won’t go away on their own, help can be found at the cosmetic surgeon’s office. Liposuction is the gold-standard in body sculpting techniques but for individuals who are seeking a less invasive treatment, CoolSculpting can be the answer.

Is Liposuction for you?

Liposuction consistently ranks as one of the most commonly performed surgical aesthetic procedures, second only to breast augmentation. This surgical approach to body sculpting removes unwanted subcutaneous fat using gentle suction. First, several very small incisions are made along the targeted area. From here, a thin, narrow cannula is then inserted through the opening, allowing the surgeon to vacuum away the fatty tissue. Liposuction is normally performed under general anesthesia. The procedure can make an excellent choice anywhere on the body, including the hips, flanks, stomach, buttocks, chin, and neck. The liposuction procedure will take from one to two hours and requires up to a week of downtime.

  • Can treat excess fat across a large area

  • Provides dramatic results

  • Is more aggressive

  • Provides an opportunity for more fat to be eliminated in each session

  • Can be done in conjunction with other procedures

  • Can be part of a fat transfer, using the eliminated fatty tissue to sculpt the face, or add volume to the breasts or buttocks

  • Results noticeable days after the procedure

  • Requires a week of downtime

The ideal candidate for liposuction will be in good health and at a stable weight. They should understand the liposuction technique, including the recovery period, all potential complications, and hold realistic expectations. The recovery period depends on the location and extent of surgery, with most patients comfortable enough to return to work in a week or less. Smoking or the use of tobacco products can delay healing so these must be avoided for at least four weeks after the procedure.

Is CoolSculpting for you?

Nonsurgical fat reduction procedures are skyrocketing in popularity. CoolSculpting uses Cryoplipolysis technology to ‘freeze’ fat cells which are then metabolized away by the body. CoolSculpting has several unique applicators, each designed for a different area of the body such as under the chin, the abdomen, the flanks or ‘love handles’, and the thighs. Once the CoolSculpting paddles are placed against the targeted area, the cooling process begins, causing the area to become numb. No anesthesia or topical anesthetic is needed. In 35 minutes, the procedure is done and patients are able to return to their normal routine. No downtime required.

  • Treats localized pockets of fat

  • Perfect for patients no wanting or willing to undergo a surgical procedure

  • Provides mild to moderate results

  • More than one session may be necessary to achieve optimal results

  • Results are not immediate but begin to show over the next three months

  • Can be repeated for an additional 20-25% reduction in fat

  • No downtime after each session, get straight back to work or school

Almost anyone who is a candidate for liposuction will also be a candidate for CoolSculpting. The ideal candidate will be at a stable weight and in generally good health. For the longest results, patients should have generally good skin laxity and be at their desired weight, with no plans for pregnancy in the future. It is important that patients have realistic expectations for their final results, as CoolSculpting only offers mild to moderate improvements.

Remember, neither liposuction or CoolSculpting is a method for weight loss. Both techniques are designed to treat isolated areas of stubborn fat. Exercise and a healthy diet are the best way to get to your target weight. The remaining pockets of fat can then be addressed through a body contouring technique from Allegro MedSpa.
